3) A. Why are there different
categories of Search Engines?
To help you tailor your website submission we have grouped
the Search Engines into the following categories:
- Default - these Engines seem to accept our submission
script on a regular basis
- Foreign - use for International Submissions, some
will only accept country URL's
You can select / deselect any individual engines at any time
by clicking the boxes. You can also use the Check All / Clear
All to save time.
4) A. What about all the Submission
Failed Notices?
These are just notices to tell you there is a notice sent
from the Search Engine that is trying to tell you something.
Click the "Search Engine Details" Box to
read the message. There are 4 kinds of Submission Failed Notices:
- Thank You Notices: will say something like "Your
website has been Submitted" - You should expect these
messages from Alexa, Amfibi,
Arianna, AxxaSearch,
Cipinet, Claymont,
DayPop, Evisum,
FindWithin, FyberSearch, IPROM,
Kazazz, SearchSight,
SurfGopher, and
SusySearch.
- More Information Notices: These tell you various
things . . . Moshix2 shows
a script but you will get instructions from them in your
email ... MyProwler and SearchEngine.com
will notify you if you try to submit anything but a homepage
... TowerSearch will need your
Name, etc ... Squizz will remind
you that they only accept Australian sites.
- Misc. Notices: Shoula
- will show a search info page ... just close it and check
your email for their welcome message. WhatUSeek
- Details will Not Open, this is normal, and you'll get
2 emails from them.
- Error Notices: If their website is down a
Connection
Failed notice will appear. Note:
These search engines show a Connection Failed notice after
your submission: Acoon, Caloga-ES,
Caloga-FR, Caloweb-DE
let you know your URL will be added ... Splat-Search
may need you to trim your Title or Description and then
requires a click ... Also, some Search Engines will only
let you submit your homepage, or not let you resubmit,
etc.
Note: Nintra
and Sootle are currently showing
an Internal Server Error ... This is a problem with their
search engines and we hope they get their techs to repair
it soon.
So
make sure you click on each "Search Engine Details"
Box to read the message!
5) A. What should I do after
Reading the "Failed Notices"?
Check you email and read each message. Most will just thank
you and welcome you, but these Search Engines may require
you to Confirm Your Listing:
- AxxaSearch
- BigLocate
- Claymont
- Moshix2
- ScrubTheWeb
- Search-O-Rama
- WebSquash
- TowerSearch
Note: AtomicBot will send email to webmaster@yourdomain.com
and admin@yourdomain.com
so you won't receive them unless you have a "catchall"
email for your domain set up.
6) A. What about Hotbot, InfoSpace,
and MSN?
There were some major Search Engine changes in 2004 - Yahoo
bought Altavista, AllTheWeb, Overture, and Inktomi (which
powers over 50 other search engines, including MSN and Hotbot).
We left our scripts intact for MSN and Hotbot UK, which used
to give us a "backdoor" into the Inktomi Database
... but we don't know for sure if Yahoo is including those.
We also left our backdoor to InfoSpace through their Japan
site, which we think still accepts free submissions.
Get
into Yahoo's Search Results by going to our EZ
Manual Site Submission Page and submit to AltaVista
and AllTheWeb - While you're there, make sure to submit
to the new MSN
Beta Search Engine that is trying to compete with Google
and Yahoo.
7) A. How often should I use
Self-Submit?
If you want to drive traffic / customers to your site, your
web pages have to be listed in as many Top Search Engines
as possible. A one-time submission will get you into some,
but many search engines will not register you the first time,
and others won't even post your site for 6-12 weeks! We suggest
a monthly marketing campain, to keep your site's listings
current.
You can use Self Submit
to register your web pages as often as you want, but
you probably should Not submit the Same Page more than once
a month, or you could get banned! Some search engines
consider that "spamming". In a good marketing campain
you might consider submitting up to 10 of your main pages
the first day, and another 10 the next day, until all of your
main pages have be submitted. Then repeat the process using
pages inside of folders, until all of your site has been submitted.
You can then start the process over again in 30 days. This
keeps a steady flow of traffic to your site.
8) A. What if I want More

The following list will give you as idea of the "DO'S"
for the search engines:
(you can create your Meta-Tags
Free at: http://www.2serveu.net/meta-tags.htm)
- Try to create "content rich" web pages that
are Informative, and "item-specific". Search engines
LOVE text, and your pages will rank higher if they specialize
in one topic. You should try to have at least 200 words
of text on any page that you are planning to register. Try
to mix in some key phrases and search terms to raise your
rankings. You may want to test your page before submitting
them with this Keyword
Density Analyzer => Search
Engines rank TEXT on your page the Highest when it comes
to indexing your site.
- Create a Title for the page that has a good combination
of "keywords" that you think people will be searching
for . . . but also, Make the Title Descriptive! These "search
terms" or "keyword phrases" should be separated
by no more than 2 (two) commas, or search engines will think
you are "keyword stuffing" the Title. Enclose
your Title with <tags> , ex. Here is the title of
this page:
<TITLE>Self Submit Search Engine Submission - Registration
Tips and FAQs</TITLE> =>
Many Search Engines rank the TITLE on your page the 2nd
Highest when it comes to indexing.
- Create a description meta tag for your page that uses
a few of your most relevant "keyword phrases"
and "search terms", separated by commas . . .
but also, Make the Description Specific in the first 10
words, and no more than 25-30 total words. Do NOT Capitalize
Each Word in your description, and try to refrain from using
characters such as "&" and "!" .
=> Some Search Engines rank the
Description <Meta-Tag> the 3rd Highest when it comes
to indexing.
- Create a keyword meta tag for your page that uses the
most relevant words and phrases. These "keywords"
and "keyword phrases" should each be separated
by a comma, and should include all of your most relevant
"search terms". To see which "search terms"
are the most popular, you can do some detective work using
the Overture
Keyword Popularity Check. =>
Some Search Engines rank the Keywords<Meta-Tag> the
4th Highest when it comes to indexing.
- You can invite Search Engine "Robots" to index
your page. If using our Meta
Tag Generator, just click "Yes" to generate
code to be indexed by Search Engines.
- You can tell the "Robots" to Follow each Link
(spider your site). If using our Meta
Tag Generator, just click "Yes" to generate
code to follow links on your site for further indexing.
The following list will give you an idea of the "DONTS"
for the search engines:
(from Search Engine Ethics:
http://www.searchengineethics.com/spamming.htm
)
- Do not use text that is the same or slightly different
color as the background to 'hide' words. Also, note the
background color to a table cell and make sure that any
text put inside the cell is not also the same color as the
page background color.
- Do not repeat the keywords in the Meta tags more than
once, and do not use keywords that are unrelated to the
site's content.
- Do not create a title like soft toys, soft toys, and
soft toys. etc. This is considered as spam.
- Do not repeat the keyword to increase its frequency on
a page (Keyword stuffing). Search engines now have the ability
to analyze a page and determine whether the frequency is
above a "normal" level in proportion to the rest of the
words in the document.
- Do not optimize a page for top ranking, and then swap
another page in its place once a top ranking is achieved.
- Do not put misleading words on the page in the hope to
attract visitors looking for another topic.
- Do not submit a page to the search engines that, once
loaded, automatically redirects to a page of different content.
- Do not create a page that prohibits the user from using
the browser's back button to return to the search engine
results.
- Do not create too many doorways with very similar keywords.
- Do not submit the same page more than once on the same
day to the same search engine.
- Do not submit pages that contain keyword filled 'sentences'
that make no sense.
- Do not put multiple instances of the Title Tag in the
HTML code. For a while, spammers were enjoying success with
this, but the search engines quickly caught them, and it
is now considered spam.
- Do not put pages of content in layers and position them
off screen or practice the same kind of behavior by turning
the visibility of the layers to 'off.'
- Do not use tiny or 'invisible text' in the page.
- Do not send query to a search engine with an automated
'rank reporting tool' hundreds of times per day.
- Do not purchase multiple domains and put duplicate copies
of the web site on each domain. Search engines can detect
duplicates and may penalize the entire block.
- Do not participate in Link Popularity Programs or Farms
(that means participating in link exchanges for the sole
purpose of increasing the ranking in search engines).
- Do not submit different versions of the web site (i.e.
do not simply duplicate a Web page, give the copies different
file names, and submit them all) in the hope of getting
multiple listings. That will be interpreted as an attempt
to flood the engine.
- Do not submit more than the allowed number of pages per
engine per day or week. Each engine has a limit on how many
pages one can manually submit to it using its online forms.
- Do not cloak.
- Do not support affiliate sites with same or similar content
but a different site designs.
- Never submit doorways to directories. Follow the submission
guidelines carefully.
