2) How to Upload Files using WS_FTP
|
|
An FTP Program is needed to upload your web pages, files, images, etc. to a web server. There are many FTP Programs available, and most popular HTML Editors have one built right in. They all need to be configured, and we'll show you how.
This tutorial deals with the popular FTP software called WS_FTP, which is available Free of charge - Download the Free version of WS_FTP
WS_FTP is Free for Students. Businesses, etc. are asked to download the Pro Version which is not Free, so keep this in mind when installing to your computer.
Important: A Site created with FrontPage should NOT be uploaded via FTP, or it's components will not work properly. Please refer to our FrontPage Tutorial
1) Make sure you are connected to the internet
2) Open up WS_FTP
3) Click the "New" button
in the upper right of screen
4) Configure each box as shown below, use your
Domain Name
and the username and password
for your Hosting Account.
(This was all sent to
you when you signed up for a Free
Hosting Trial)

5) Now click on the "Startup" tab and type /public_html/
in the 1st box,
and the location of the folder
that your web files are stored in for box 2.
Click on the "OK"
button
6) If all the information above was entered correctly, you will
hear the
"train sound" and see a split screen (below) showing your
files & folders:
the Left Screen
shows your Local System: the
web site files on YOUR HARD DRIVE
the Right
Screen shows your Remote Site: the
files in your HOSTING ACCOUNT

7) Now let's upload your Homepage to your Hosting Account . . .
just click on the file named "index.htm" on your Local
Sytem to select it
then click on the
to transfer the file to your Remote Site . . . it's that easy!
Tip: you can tranfer multiple
files by holding down your "Ctrl" Key while selecting
PS: To download files from your Remote Site, just select the files
